About the Kangal

The Sivas Kangal is a large and powerful breed of dog. Bred for the sole purpose of being a live stock guardian against predators such as wolves, bears and jackals. Kangals are not known by any other names and have been around for hundreds of years, originating out of Turkey. These dogs can weigh anywhere from 100-140 lbs, have a running speed of up to 35 mph, and a bite force of about 743 lbs. compared to that of a wolf with 408 lbs and a Rottweiler of 328 lbs. They are fiercely protective of their flocks and herds. They also have special affinity for women and children.

Their color is always solid and ranges from a light dun or pale, dull gold to a steel gray. This basic color is set off by a black mask which will cover the muzzle and even extend over the top of the head. They have a double coat which allows them to tolerate both extreme heat and cold naturally. It is also dense enough to protect them from puncture wounds. Kagals are nocturnal animals, they patrol during the night and sleep during the day. You can also find out more about this breed at www.kangaldogamerica.com.
